The Houston Methodist System comprises a leading academic medical center located in the Texas Medical Center and seven community hospitals serving the Greater Houston area. Houston Methodist Hospital, the system’s flagship, has been ranked #1 hospital in Texas by U.S. News and World Report every year since the award began and is one of the top nationally ranked Honor Roll hospitals (currently #16). The Department of Medicine encompasses a number of nationally ranked programs, including Gastroenterology (#10), Endocrinology and Diabetes (#16), Pulmonology (#19), Nephrology (#21), Geriatrics (#22), and Cancer (#23). The department has 75 faculty pathologists and approximately 40 residents and fellows. Of the 75 faculty who provide all anatomic and clinical pathology services for the system’s eight hospitals, 18 faculty members practice predominantly or solely clinical pathology.

Qualified candidates will be eligible for primary faculty appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Houston Methodist Academic Institute. Secondary faculty appointments at Texas A&M College of Medicine and other medical school affiliates also are possible.

Position Overview

The Houston Methodist Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine is seeking a highly qualified pathologist to serve as Vice-Chair for our seven outlying hospitals, all located in the Houston metroplex. The department currently has 75 full-time pathologists who provide all anatomic and clinical pathology services for all eight hospitals in the Houston Methodist System in metropolitan Houston, Texas. There are 16 pathologists at our seven outlying community hospitals. The Vice Chair will be based at one of our outlying hospitals in the Houston Methodist system, and report directly to the Chair. The Vice Chair will be responsible for ensuring seamless integration of pathology services throughout Houston Methodist system. In addition to leadership, oversight, and strategic guidance, she/he will be responsible for the clinical performance and professional matters of the outlying hospital pathologists. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading professional teams in a collaborative fashion, coordinating service lines, and developing and implementing initiatives that improve patient care and faculty development.

Qualifications

  • MD, MD/PhD, or DO with certification by the American Board of Pathology and the relevant subspecialty, if applicable.
  • Possession of or eligibility for an unrestricted Texas medical license.
  • Outstanding clinical skills and prior experience in a pathology leadership role.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Track record of proven successful professional leadership, including career development, and program development, implementation, and evolution.
  • A forward-thinking and strategically oriented individual is desired.
