The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, dba as UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), is seeking a dynamic, academic leader to serve as its Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics (MIMG).
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), one of six health institutions in The University of Texas System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas and is a major center for patient care in South Texas. UT Health San Antonio is a comprehensive academic health center with 3,250 students enrolled in five schools: the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, and the School of Health Professions.

Reporting to the Dean of the Long School of Medicine, the Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics is responsible for the overall administrative, academic and research activities of the Department.
The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics (MIMG) is the nucleus for research and education in immunology and microbiology for the five schools at UT Health San Antonio and provides a dynamic environment for scientific discovery and training. This is a unique opportunity to lead an outstanding basic science department with strategic vision and direction. UT Health San Antonio combines scientific discovery with clinical care in innovative and transformative ways. The department’s mission is to advance research and training in microbiology and immunology and to build the knowledge necessary for the development of new vaccines and therapies for the future. To this end, basic and translational research are of equal importance to foster discovery and translate those discoveries into new therapeutics.
This strong department includes 21 primary tenured or tenure-track faculty, 17 cross-appointed faculty, and 14 adjunct faculty. The department hosts a robust population of students and fellows including 11 postdocs, 25 PhD students, 24 MS students, 19 additional foreign trainees and 5-10 undergraduate students. MIMG, ranked 49 by Blue Ridge for 2018, has received $8.9 million (84% from NIH) in extramural funding in FY19, a 23% increase over the previous year.
- PhD and/or MD is required.
- Academic credentials which merit appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor Capabilities and Experience.
- Significant leadership experience and demonstrated success as a manager at the Chair, Associate Director, Director or program leader level gained within an academic medical center, and/or immunology and microbiology institute, including successful experience in the recruitment, retention, and management of researchers and clinicians.
- Strong organizational, management, financial, and budgetary skills with the ability to bring scientific leadership and organization innovation to the management of people and processes.
- A demonstrated ability to think strategically with a vision of how to develop immunology and microbiology research and services for the future while keeping an eye on the details of the implementation; has the ability to articulate a vision that will promote and integrate immunology and microbiology research, care, and education across UTHSA and the community.
- A proven background in recruitment, mentoring, and development of outstanding academic and administrative leadership. A dedicated leader and mentor to scientists, clinicians, and staff.
- A strong personal track record of significant continuous funding, ideally with an NIH- funded research program, that preferably both individual grant funding as well as multi-investigator grant funding—and peer-reviewed publications.
- An ability to grow revenue and attract external funding from institutions and individuals; specific experience with donor fundraising a plus.
- A commitment to and demonstrated results in the advancement of diversity and inclusion in current organization.
- A demonstrated record of building strong teams, both within and across disciplines. Evidence of support for interdisciplinary research and clinical program development is highly valued.
- A strong track record of integrity, credibility and a demonstrated capacity to build trusting relationships, and a management style that seeks to share information and welcomes input into the decision-making process.
- Demonstrated political acumen and the necessary skills to constructively balance the interests of diverse stakeholders.
