The mission of the UMGCCC is to undertake innovative basic, clinical, population and prevention research that will impact the understanding and treatment of cancer around the world and to provide state-of-the-art clinical care to cancer patients in Maryland and beyond. Bringing promising new therapies from the laboratory to the bedside is a high priority, and UMGCCC scientists are immersed in research on new drugs and therapies, as evidenced by the more than 200 clinical trials currently underway at the Center. This means that patients have access to many of the very latest treatment options that often will not be commercially available for up to five years.

Position Overview

The University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking an established investigator to serve as Tumor Immunologist within the UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC). The goal of the Tumor Immunologist is to build and maintain and independent a federally funded (NIH, etc.) research program, consistent with UMGCCC and School of Medicine long-term goals. S/he will develop and sustain ongoing collaborative relationships with other laboratories and research leadership throughout the center and the School of Medicine. In addition, this individual will assist in the recruitment of faculty, staff, and educators whose backgrounds will further contribute to the development of inquiry and translational investigation within the UMGCCC. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other basic science research faculty and clinicians within the center. S/he will work to ensure that medical and graduate students, oncology residents and fellows are exposed to a robust and relevant basic science didactic curriculum. S/he will be expected to serve as a mentor to graduate and medical students and to oversee their research experience. The successful candidate will be asked to increase the clinical relevance of the center’s research tumor immunology portfolio by increasing the involvement of the clinical faculty in the center’s basic research program. The new Tumor Immunologist should serve as a mentor to junior scientists in the center including junior clinical faculty who wish to develop their basic science portfolio into an important and sustainable part of their career.  The Tumor Immunologist will be a senior member of the UMGCCC Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy research program which was rated outstanding to exceptional in the 2016 NCI site visit review.  S/he will take advantage of the new GMP cell processing lab which is being built at the UMGCCC to support clinical and translational research in immunology.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or MD / Ph.D. is required.
  • Strong history of federal grant support, including funding through NIH.
  • Accomplished academic record sufficient to fulfill the University of Maryland criteria for associate professor or professor level faculty appointment.
