DUHS Clinical Laboratories are College of American Pathologist (CAP) accredited, CLIA certified, state of the art, multidisciplinary labs. They span three hospitals (DUH, DRH, and DRAH) and include over 40 different specialized work centers, a large point of care testing program, and phlebotomy throughout Duke. The laboratories employ a wide range of practices, from high-throughput, highly automated testing in our hematology, chemistry, and immunoassay laboratories, to specialized mass spectrometry and molecular-based testing in many of our subspecialty labs. The laboratories are under the medical and administrative oversight of our clinical pathologists and doctoral level medical laboratory professionals in Clinical Pathology Division within our Department of Pathology.

Position Overview

The Department of Pathology at Duke University Medical Center is recruiting a full‐time faculty member to serve as Medical Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory provides clinical services to Duke University Hospital, a large tertiary care center that annually treats over 40,000 patients in its 957-bed hospital and more than 2 million clinic patients in its various ambulatory facilities. The Department is seeking an outstanding clinical microbiologist who possesses a broad range of experience across all areas of routine microbiology testing, as well as experience with molecular technologies and molecular microbiology diagnostic platforms. The Medical Director, Clinical Microbiology Laboratory will provide vision, leadership, and operational oversight for the 55 FTE Clinical Microbiology Laboratory to ensure that the laboratory provides outstanding clinical care to patients and supports the academic research and teaching missions of the health system. In addition, the Medical Director will help coordinate microbiology testing activities at affiliated community hospitals and primary care and outpatient clinics. Although this position is clinical in nature, there are opportunities to develop a collaborative or independent clinical translational research program with clinicians and investigators within the Department of Pathology, the Division of Infectious Disease, or other investigators and clinical scientists throughout the health system.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must either be board certified/eligible in pathology (CP or AP/CP) or have a medical degree and have successfully completed a medical microbiology fellowship program.
  • For CP or AP/CP pathologists, sub‐specialty board certification/board eligibility in medical microbiology is strongly desired.
  • Eligibility to obtain a medical license in North Carolina is also required.
  • The Medical Director will be appointed to the full‐time faculty of Duke University Medical Center in the Department of Pathology at a rank commensurate with experience and will be a member of the physician practice.
