The UMass Chan Medical School and the Department of Population & Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS) are seeking an academically accomplished, visionary, and passionate leaders to serve as the founding Executive Director of the UMass T.H. Chan Collaborative in Health Equity (CHE). The CHE will serve as a convening and value-adding entity to coalesce, energize, and enhance the many instances of excellent health equity research and service, Community-engaged research and service, service learning, and global health research and service that are dispersed across the UMass Academic Health Sciences Center. The CHE will feature a Community Investment Program to support community-engaged grant programs, funded competitively as collaborations between academic and community partnerships. The work of the CHE will center on the intersection of service and research, often through equitable community partnerships.
UMass T.H. Chan’s Medical School’s 2020–2025 strategic plan (Impact 2025) guides actions over the next five years on behalf of the diverse communities served by the medical school. The five ‘pillars’ outlined in Impact 2025 are (1) Education, (2) Basic Science, (3) Translational Research, (4) Community and Global Impact, and (5) Operational Excellence and Financial Stewardship. An Impact 2025 Implementation Committee for Community and Global Impact was formed to begin operationalizing the community and global impact priorities and milestones outlined in Impact 2025. Based on a year of Implementation Committee meetings with an extensive array of diverse faculty, a high-level vision and project plan were developed to bring the vision articulated in Impact 2025 into tangible form through the UMass T.H. Chan Collaborative in Health Equity.
Members of the CHE will include faculty, staff, and students who will have opportunities to network and identify community mentors and research partners, both existing and prospective, from within UMass and partnering communities. Members will have access to funding for pilot and full projects, awarded on a competitive basis. Rapid turn-around for new projects will ensure the ability to nimbly respond to emerging and existing public health threats. Members may receive assistance with quantitative and qualitative methodology and scientific writing, policy briefs, and lay communications. Emphasis will be based on helping members achieving sustainability for their projects through policy relevance. The CHE will work to enhance the scholarly output of student products and educational curriculum related to global health and health equity. The CHE will be led by a high-profile health equity researcher and will report to a Governing Board with representation from UMass and the communities we serve.
Beyond fostering their personal research portfolio, the Executive Director will be tasked with casting and implementing a mission, vision, strategic plan, success metrics, and milestones for the UMass Collaborative in Health Equity. In particular, the ED will bridge the existing, fragmented silos of excellence across campuses focused on health equity and community and global research and education.
- Education Requirement: doctoral-level degree
- 10-15 years of experience effectively leading programs that relate to health equity
- Accomplishments requisite for appointment to a tenure or tenure track position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
- National and/or international stature in a field related to health equity, with possibilities including a substantial track record in extramural funding or high-profile national or international leadership positions
