The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is the largest, most comprehensive facility for medical treatment, medical education, and biomedical research in Arkansas. UAMS impacts the state of Arkansas economy by generating 18,500 jobs and $3.92 billion expenditures annually. The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is among the largest at UAMS with approximately 105 full-time faculty members, and training ranks that include 88 residents and 68 fellows in two residency programs and twelve fellowship programs.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is seeking a dynamic endocrinologist to lead the Division further into the 21st century. The successful candidate will be an MD or MD-PhD physician scientist who is a funded basic, translational or clinical investigator in endocrinology. The area of focus may be diabetes or other aspects of endocrinology.
The Division Director will be an emerging or established leader and will direct and provide oversight for clinical, research, and educational programs, including an excellent fellowship program in Diabetes and Metabolism. In addition to his/her own research interests, the Division Director will determine the directions for research in the Division. While based at the University for Medical Sciences, the Division Director will also provide direction for, and oversight of the important Division activities at the adjacent Central Arkansas Veterans Administration Health System, where very substantial clinical, research and educational work is based. At UAMS, the clinical programs in endocrinology are part of the Integrated Medical Specialties Service Line.
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism has a long tradition of being a research-intensive Division, and it is expected that the tradition will be even more luminous. Within the Division are numerous faculty members, based both at UAMS and the VA, who are well-funded MD, MD/PhD and PhD scientists. The focus of investigation in the past 25 years has been largely in bone metabolism. The Division Director will be expected to define her/his own direction for research, while continuing to be supportive of the major ongoing bone metabolism program. Excellent laboratory space is available as well as access to core laboratories. There is the opportunity to interact with the Translational Research Institute (TRI) funded by UAMS’s CTSA. There is major funding from the College of Medicine for a collaborative Bone and Joint Initiative that includes faculty from Endocrinology and Orthopedic Surgery. The Division is also home of the Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases, a unique academic facility occupying 15,000 square feet of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. As one of the largest research units of its kind in the United States, the Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases is nationally and internationally recognized as a center of excellence and a unique resource.
- MD or equivalent degree.
- American Board of Internal Medicine sub-specialty board certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
- Must hold, or be eligible for, unrestricted state medical license in the state of Arkansas.
- A minimum of seven years of full-time experience as an academic endocrinologist. The ideal candidate will hold an academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
- A record as an excellent clinician in endocrinology.
- Strong, sustained record of senior leadership and administrative experience in support of students and faculty in teaching, service and scholarship excellence gained within an academic health care setting.
- A track record of nationally recognized research within the field of endocrinology, including active funding for basic, clinical or translational research, with an established record of excellent scholarly productivity.
- Knowledge and understanding of health care trends and biomedical research trends.
- Ability to manage an academic organization and work effectively and collaboratively with community leaders, interdisciplinary professionals and colleagues in a complex university environment.
- Proven ability to lead and manage by example.
- Proven ability as an effective clinical educator at an academic medical center.
- Skilled in consensus building, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
- Superior interpersonal skills (both written and verbal) and effective presentation skills.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to gather and assess data and generate meaningful strategies for problem resolution.
- Ability to recruit, retain and develop both clinically oriented and research-oriented faculty members.
- Ability to successfully manage the Division budget.
