The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), located in Jackson, is the state’s only academic health science center. With more than 9,600 full- and part-time employees, including more than 630 physicians, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The 905-bed University Hospitals and Health System is the teaching center for all Medical Center educational programs and a diagnostic and treatment referral center for the entire state. The Medical Center is home to the state’s only Level I trauma center, Level IV NICU, children’s hospital, and organ transplant program. The School of Medicine strives to offer an excellent, comprehensive, and interrelated program of medical education, biomedical research, and health care. The School of Medicine enrolls approximately 145 students per class, and has gradually increased enrollment for the past five years to meet the state’s growing need for physicians. When a new, $74 million medical school building is completed in 2017, enrollment per class will further increase to 165 students. The school offers residencies and fellowships in approximately 50 specialties and subspecialties, and the programs host a total of 626 residents and fellows.
The Department of Medicine at UMMC has a growing hospitalist program comprised of internists caring for inpatients and serving in both teaching and non-teaching roles. The Department currently has an established Division of Hospital Medicine with faculty members who play a major role in inpatient medical care, the education of medical residents and students, and clinical research related to quality, efficiency, and broader areas of health services research. The Division Director will be an integral part of the leadership and growth of the Division of Hospital Medicine and the Department. The Division Director will be an academic internist at the associate professor or professor level and will be a key leader for clinical programs, education, and research.
- Board certification in internal medicine.
- Evidence of academic accomplishments consistent with appointment to the rank of associate professor or professor.
- At least five years of experience in an academic hospitalist program.
- Previous leadership experience in an academic hospitalist program.
- Direct experience managing complex inpatients, competency in standard inpatient procedures (including obtaining and interpretation of an arterial blood gas, central line placement, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, paracentesis and arthrocentesis).
- Solid understanding of the hospitalist role and function, and an interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, providing effective communication, both verbal and written, and an interest in furthering the research, scholarly and academic missions of the group
