The Markey Cancer Center was founded in 1983 and is a matrix cancer center established as an integral part of the University of Kentucky and the UK HealthCare enterprise. On July 8, 2013, the MCC was designated as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) cancer center, the only NCI-designated cancer center in Kentucky. Since earning NCI designation, the MCC has experienced more than a 25% increase in clinical volume and a 53% increase in research funding. This momentum exemplifies the Center’s goal of achieving comprehensive cancer center status within three years.
The Deputy Director of the Markey Cancer Center and Michael Karpf Endowed Chair for Precision Medicine will play a key role in the further growth and development of the Markey Cancer Center (MCC). This individual will have the primary duties of synthesizing and integrating the translational investigation program through close strategic interactions with other MCC leaders. The Deputy Director will be heavily involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating the Center’s early phase clinical research efforts, and S/he will play essential roles in maintaining and renewing NCI designation (P30 Cancer Center Support Grant). The Deputy Director will report to the MCC Director and lead recruitment efforts for 3 translational clinical investigators, including specific expertise and interest in phase 1 clinical studies — recruitment would be performed in conjunction with the medical oncology division chief, cancer center director and chair of Internal Medicine. Completion of a dedicated Phase I Unit is slated for early spring 2017.
- An MD degree or equivalent with board certification in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and an unrestricted state medical license.
- Strong history of Phase I Clinical Trials research implementation and oversight.
- Area of expertise/strength within one of the following areas strongly preferred: breast, GI, GU, thoracic oncology, or melanoma.
- Strong leadership skills; preference will be given to candidates that have significant leadership expertise within an NCI designated cancer center.
- Effective supervisory skills, including clinical mentoring and coaching expertise.
