Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is Minnesota’s premier Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center with many nationally recognized programs and specialties. It also offers an extensive system of primary care and retail clinics located throughout Hennepin County. Hennepin County Medical Center is an essential teaching hospital for doctors who go on to practice throughout the state. Additionally, the Medical Center is a safety net hospital providing care for low-income, uninsured and vulnerable populations, and plays a substantial role as a major employer and economic engine in Hennepin County. HCMC surgeons perform nearly 10,000 surgeries each year. While more than one-third of the surgical patients are considered “major” in the severity of illness according to University Health Consortium data, HCMC surgeons also provide a full range of elective surgical care and have expertise in the latest minimally invasive techniques.

Position Overview

The Chief of Surgery is the clinical and academic leader of the Department of Surgery and is responsible for ensuring the recruitment and retention of the medical staff members required to achieve the organization’s mission. The Chief manages the department budget with a dyad administrative partner, sets medical staff compensation and oversees the organization’s academic mission, care quality, and continuous improvement. The Chief is responsible for the time allocation of department members and ensures adequate patient access to care while fostering a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to care delivery that promotes safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable and patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate Degree (MD or DO) is required.
  • Board Certified in an ABMS recognized specialty.
  • Minimum five years’ administrative leadership experience at a department or section level.
  • Eligible for academic appointment at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
  • Qualified to lead an academic department.
