Grant Cooper is seeking a Chief for the Division of Pediatric Medical Genetics for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the state’s only academic health science center.  UMMC encompasses seven health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies, population health, and pharmacy. Enrollment in all programs is more than 2,900 students. With over 9,600 full- and part-time employees, including more than 630 physicians, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The Medical Center’s $1.6 billion annual budget represents 10 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and 2 percent of the state economy.

Children’s of Mississippi’s Batson Children’s Hospital is the only medical facility in the state devoted exclusively to the care and treatment of sick and injured children and adolescents. The hospital averages 9,000 admissions per year and nearly 80,000 children are treated in its clinics and emergency room annually. Patients come from all of Mississippi’s 82 counties to receive comprehensive medical care for everything from common childhood illnesses to serious trauma and life-threatening or chronic illnesses. Batson Hospital provides care in more than 30 specialty areas, including newborn medicine, pediatric cardiology, neurology, and surgery. It houses the state’s only pediatric intensive care unit and emergency department along with Mississippi’s only pediatric treatment programs for cancer, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, congenital heart defects, and more.

Position Overview

The Chief of the Division of Pediatrics Medical Genetics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center provides leadership and has overall responsibility for pediatric medical genetic services of the Medical Center as well as leading the pediatric medical research efforts. The Chief works closely with the leadership of the Department of Pediatrics and is expected to have a track record of clinical excellence in the field of pediatric genetics and genomics.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification from American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).
  • Eligible for permanent, unrestricted licensure in Mississippi.
  • Management education or training a plus.
  • All academic work must qualify for appointment at the appropriate level at UMMC.
