The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock is the only academic health sciences university in the state of Arkansas. The Department of Pediatrics is the largest department of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine in Little Rock, Arkansas. The main offices of the Department are located on the campus of Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH), a long-time clinical and teaching affiliate of UAMS. The two institutions coordinate clinical service, educational programs and research initiatives among pediatric faculty and other university faculty. Pediatrics’ faculty is also assigned to selected areas within the UAMS Medical Center and subspecialty physicians from the Department provide clinical services on a regular basis to regional clinics around the state.
Pediatrics’ staffing totals more than 1,100 employees, including more than 200 faculty members and 950 professionals, paraprofessionals and support staff working in 26 sections in the department.
The Department of Pediatrics at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has a growing hospitalist program including 15 physicians caring for inpatients Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) on both teaching and non-teaching teams. They work closely with emergency medicine physicians, primary care physicians, surgeons and other specialists to provide efficient, quality care from admission to discharge. Because of their expertise in inpatient care and primary presence in the hospital, hospitalists can diagnose multiple comorbidities, anticipate problems and rapidly respond to crises or changes in a patient’s condition. The division renders a wide range of services pertaining to patient care that involves diagnosis, treatment, and various medical procedures. It also collaborates in the coordination of medical care with other medical specialties to ensure safe transitioning of patient care while in the hospital; and from the hospital to the home environment providing the best quality of care.
The Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine leads the growth of the Division and be a key leader for clinical programs, education, and research. The Chief works with the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the UAMS, as well as ACH leadership to develop the overall strategy and direction of inpatient clinical care at Arkansas Children’s. The Chief ensures a positive patient and family experience, nurtures and develops inpatient clinical care education and training programs, promotes a multidisciplinary research effort, and provides fiduciary accountability.
- MD or equivalent degree and board certification in pediatrics or medicine-pediatrics.
- Eligibility for and subsequent success in obtaining an unrestricted Arkansas medical license, malpractice insurance, and credentialing by central Arkansas teaching hospitals.
- At least five years of experience in an academic pediatric hospitalist program preferred but willing to consider a candidate with strong pediatric hospitalist experience who is interested in working in an academic setting.
- Previous leadership experience in an academic pediatric hospitalist program preferred.
- Direct experience managing complex inpatients, competency in standard inpatient procedures.
- Solid understanding of the hospitalist role and function, and an interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, providing effective communication, both verbal and written, and an interest in furthering the research, scholarly and academic missions of the group.
- Demonstrated ability to improve outcomes in the areas of quality, safety, satisfaction, and efficiencies of care.
- High degree of technology proficiency with EMR/EHR, e-prescribing, telehealth and other electronic medical systems, standard Microsoft Office applications and system databases.
