Established in 2016, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine is the realization of the decades-long effort of community leaders and other supporters to establish a medical school in the Valley to provide health care to a region that historically has been burdened by health disparities. The mission is to improve the quality of life and health for all in the Rio Grande Valley through collaborative innovations advancing healthcare, education, and research in a model of integration and teamwork within the community.
To help realize the mission, the university is seeking a Chair for the Department of Neurology. This leader will contribute significantly to the new UTRGV Institute for Neurosciences, recently established with the help of a $15 million gift to the School of Medicine from The Valley Baptist Health Legacy Foundation. The new Institute commitment will support multiple faculty recruits and a separate facility, totaling approximately 50,000 square feet to house the clinical, education and research enterprise.
The founding Chair will provide academic leadership for the new Department of Neurology and will expand and build collaborative relationships and grow innovative programs within the School of Medicine and the Division of Health Affairs. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs/Dean of the School of Medicine, the founding Chair will work collaboratively with other UTRGV schools/colleges to develop interdisciplinary opportunities for teaching and research that will help address the unique health care priorities for the region. The founding Chair will play an instrumental role in implementing the vision and programs that will continue UTRGV’s important role in enhancing the health care available to the population of South Texas.
- M.D. with Board certification in Neurology.
- Five years of progressive leadership experience, with a strong focus on clinical and research success for meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor.
- Strong organizational, management, financial, and budgetary skills with the ability to bring scientific leadership and organization innovation to the management of people and processes.
- Proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring, and development. Experience or ability to nurture and grow a successful residency program.
- A strong communicator and diplomat who is able to inspire and effectively communicate with wide and diverse audiences at all levels of the organization and externally.
